Fossoli's contentration camp is a symbolic place inside the territory's collective memory, a quiet reality with an important multi-layered history, carrying some of the most fundamental values for its inhabitants. The multimedia experience created for Fossoli Foundation, has placed the viewers at the heart of the project, trying to imagine how technology could be a mean of diffusion for an historical and civil description addressed to an heterogeneous audience for age and sensitivity. The greatest challenge of the design process has been the transposition of a complex and rich history into a contemporary language that could preserve its integrity while respecting its memory.
The path carried out together with the Foundation, has identified and designed two types of experience: a smartphone application for single visitors to the camp that can act as a guide and information tool, and an iPad application to equip a series of tablets available to school classes during guided tours.
In the smartphone application, the heart of the experience lays in the succession of silence and moment of listening. Silence invites to the reverberation with the environment, a place where history is a more spiritual than architectural presence. The audio tracks and the selected images, give the audience the chance to explore the history and the narrations of the testimonies. The visit is composed by different steps, described by a narrating voice, that illustrates the camp through the different periods and historic evidences. The historical journey is accompanied by a more emotional path, composed by traces positioned in a more casual way inside the camp. The tracks are testimonies and audio stories of people who have experienced the camp, which the user can see on the map and listen to, as approaching them. If the goal of the steps is to inform, the audio tracks are able to bring the visitor closer to the history, creating a bridge between past and present. The part dedicated to the visit is integrated with additional information sections, which allow the user to better understand the context of the reality of the concentration camp.
The tablet application - on the other hand - has a support function for educational visits to the camp, with the aim of integrating the information provided by the guides. Th application presents photo galleries with archival materials and a map with the all the tracks: at the end of the guided tour, small groups of students are invited to explore the camp, looking for testimonies to listen.
On the occasion of Festivalfilosofia 2021, a special content been implemented on the app. It is composed by various audio tracks focused on the topic of Freedom, where historical tracks are matches with contemporary narrations of refugees. A bridge between present and past is thus created, offering the visitors a critical reflection on contemporary times and fostering the stimuli that history suggests.
