Like on a theatre stage, which may change appearance on the basis of the show it is hosting, each time in a new guise, we modelled the spaces, the light and the display elements in order to let its multifaceted expressivity emerge.
Our aim is to lead the visitor into a genuine ‘fly tower’, of which s/he may have the perception of finding him/herself in a recreated place and in a unique atmosphere, each time different from the last. The fly tower as a place, in the language of theatre, is that fundamental part of the stage apparatus from which the various elements that make up the stage scenery are hung, thus influencing the identity of the show. This space is characterised visually by its great height, in an analogy with the settings subjected to the intervention, and by the verticality sensed on one’s initial impact with them. In the project design, architectural and multimedia display elements – conceived so as to lend themselves to a range of narratives – dialogue with the visitor, going beyond the concept of the stalls, and developing an outright emotional itinerary, allowing spectators to become immersed in the scene and fully experience the volumes that this space has to offer: the levels concerned by this intervention are no longer separate surfaces but part of a continuum which may offer a range of different points of view on the contents featured. A membrane made up of horizontal wooden slats, just as a stage wing marks off a flight of stairs that links Level 25 directly to Level 27. This path is thereby identified physically, but not visually or emotionally. The new, higher point of view that the stair permits is a theatrical series of prospective focus points, wide openings with a surprise effect and the interplay of light and transparency. This membrane was designed to constitute a recurring element that also plays a strongly functional role, which will be examined in the section on Level 25.
The media devices developed increase the communicative potential of the environment, intensifying the perception of finding oneself in a profoundly expressive setting. Their use will allow the visitor to drop down to the bottom of the scene and the surrounding landscape, at the same time encouraging sociality and interaction, not only with the spaces and contents, but also among users themselves, with a view to creating a place animated by relations on Level 25. On the gallery of Level 26, a kinetic installation dancing in the air, falling apart and then returning to its original shape, is designed as a homage to the tower. The great LED Wall on Level 27 provides a window of virtual light on Bologna, as well as a flexible backdrop for various functions, from performances to the presentation of work.
